Marlins stumble again
Miami grabbed a 1-0 advantage yesterday in the third inning at New York, but eventually fell by a 4-1 score to drop to 10-29 overall and 4-14 on the road. Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara helped his own cause in the third with an RBI double. He ended the game offensively by going 1-for-2 with the RBI double. He also took the loss on the mound as he allowed four earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks over 5 2/3 innings. Jon Berti was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run. Starlin Castro, Neil Walker and Harold Ramirez each finished 1-for-4. Caleb Smith will start today as he comes in with a 3-0 record, 2.11 ERA and 0.89 WHIP with 56 strikeouts over 42 2/3 innings.
Mets roll behind deGrom
New York overcame a slow start to post a 4-1 home win Saturday over Miami to improve to 19-20 overall and 9-8 at home. Over seven innings of work, Jacob deGrom allowed one earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Michael Conforto helped lead the offense as he finished 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a walk. Helping his own cause, deGrom was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Pete Alonso ended the contest 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Syndergaard will start today for the Mets as he enters with a 2-3 record, 5.14 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 54 strikeouts over 49 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
Miami
The Marlins are 0-5 in their last five Sunday games. Miami is 4-1 in the last five Smith starts.
New York
The Mets are 1-5 in their last five Sunday games. New York is 9-3 in the last 12 Syndergaard home starts.
Prediction:
New York has played well in the first two games of the series, but runs into its by far toughest test in the series against the talented Smith. While the moneyline makes sense where it’s at considering the Marlins’ big-time struggles and Syndergaard’s name recognition, the fact is the stronger pitcher in this matchup has been Smith this season. Syndergaard was spectacular two starts ago, but faltered again earlier this week. I still don’t trust him. Take a shot on the Marlins here.
