Mets score three in ninth to prevail
New York had been shut down by Phillies starter Jake Arrieta for 7 1/3 shutout innings Friday night and Philadelphia continued to lead by a slim 1-0 score heading to the ninth. But a three-spot off Phillies closer Hector Neris propelled the Mets to the 3-1 victory. Michael Conforto, who went 2-for-3, hit a two-run homer with one out to give New York a 2-1 lead. Devin Mesoraco, acquired this week from the Reds in a trade for Matt Harvey, followed up with an insurance home run to lead the way to the win. Asdubal Cabrera went 2-for-3 with a double. A.J. Ramos threw a scoreless inning of relief to earn the win, while Jeurys Familia pitched the ninth for his 11th save.
Syndergaard will get the start today as he is 2-1 with a 3.09 ERA, striking out 54 over 46 2/3 innings with a WHIP of 1.20.
Herrera stays red-hot
Odubel Herrera is hitting like he wants to win a batting crown as he racked up two more hits in three at-bats Friday, including a solo home run in the bottom of the first that held up as the game's only run until the fateful ninth inning. Herrera is now batting .360 on the season from the third spot in the batting order with an OPS of .995. He batted .281 last season with an OPS of .777. Scott Kingery was the only other Philly player with multiple hits as he had a pair of singles in four at-bats.
Philadelphia turns to Zach Eflin (0.71 ERA, 12 2/3 IP) for today's start. He threw 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball in an 11-0 home win over the Giants his last start.
MLB Betting Trends
The Mets are 0-8 in their last eight games following a win. New York is 2-8 in its last 10 games overall.
The Phillies are 25-58 in the last 83 meetings. Philadelphia is 2-9 in the last 11 starts by Eflin.
I just can't trust Eflin enough to bet on him, even at home and after two fantastic starts to open his MLB season. He is due for some regression and is only average at best. Expect to see Syndergaard dial it up here and turn in one of his better outings of the season to get the win for New York as it attempts to get back on track.
