Mets’ Wheeler only goes four innings in last start
Zack Wheeler lasted just four innings and was charged with four runs Tuesday but escaped with a no-decision in a 6-5 extra-innings win over the Cardinals. Wheeler was in an early hole after he walked Matt Carpenter to lead off the bottom of the first inning and Tommy Pham followed with a two-run homer. It didn’t get much better after that, as he yielded six hits and walked two while fanning three. Wheeler will have a bounce-back opportunity in a better matchup this weekend in San Diego.
Padres’ Mitchell settles down after rough first inning
Bryan Mitchell gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Rockies. Mitchell’s line isn’t pretty, but it could have been much worse after he gave up four in the bottom the first. Still, it’s another poor effort from the former Yankee, and his ERA now sits at 5.76. At some point, you have to wonder if San Diego will move the right-hander to the bullpen, but it’s too soon for that to happen just yet. His next start will come Sunday against the Mets in Petco Park.
