Brewers’ Guerra allows just one unearned run vs. Marlins
Junior Guerra allowed only an unearned run over five innings in Sunday’s win over the Marlins. Guerra gave up five hits and a walk, striking out four in the effort. He’s now allowed just one earned run over his first three starts combined, resulting in a 0.56 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. That’s a very promising development after the 33-year-old put up a 5.12 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 21 appearances last season. A good litmus test will come Saturday when Guerra squares off against the Cubs in Chicago.
Cubs’ Quintana picks up win but surrenders four runs
Jose Quintana allowed four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings Sunday but earned the win against the Rockies. Quintana served up a pair of homers in the thin mountain air, but he struck out seven while walking just one and did enough to pick up his second win of the year. It’s been a pretty mixed bag thus far, and outside of a six-inning gem in Milwaukee earlier this month there hasn’t been a lot to like about Quintana’s early stats. That said, he’s traditionally a slow starter — April is, for his career, his worst month, statistically — so as the weather warms up, so might he. Quintana will look for sunnier skies Saturday against the Brewers.
MLB Betting Trends
Milwaukee
The Brewers are just 2-5 in Guerra’s last seven road starts but have won 17 of their last 25 road games overall, regardless of who starts.
Chicago
The Cubs are 8-1 in Quintana’s last nine home starts and 10-3 in his last 13 outings overall.
Prediction:
It’s always a risk to take the under at Wrigley Field but Guerra has been fantastic early on, allowing just one earned run and striking out 15 batters through 16 innings. He also hasn’t allowed a home run yet after surrendering a whopping 18 dingers last season in just 70 1/3 innings. Quintana, meanwhile, hasn’t been sharp but did strike out six in a six-inning shutout against the Brewers three starts ago. As nervous as I am about Wrigley, I’ll roll the dice on the under.
The Pick: Brewers/Cubs under 7
