McCarthy proving to be nice offseason pick up for Braves
Brandon McCarthy earned his third win of the season by holding the Phillies to one run in 5 1/3 innings on Wednesday. He notched six strikeouts against two walks and surrendered five base hits — all singles. The only run he allowed came on a base hit by opposing pitcher Vince Velasquez. He wasn’t able to go deep into the game but did last long enough to get credit for the victory.
McCarthy has been a nice pickup by the Braves this year as he moves to 3-0 with a 2.91 ERA after four turns through the rotation.
Reds’ Mahle continues to struggle
Tyler Mahle allowed seven hits and two runs over five innings Wednesday in the Reds’ loss to the Brewers. Mahle struck out six and walked four while throwing 57 of his 94 pitches for strikes. The right-hander pitched himself into a few jams but benefited from a pair of double plays. He allowed both of his runs in the third inning on a two-run blast by Eric Thames.
The Reds are really struggling and that includes Mahle, who fell to 1-3 with Wednesday’s loss. He’ll get a chance to right the ship in his next start Tuesday against Atlanta.
MLB Betting Trends
Atlanta
The Braves a perfect 4-0 in McCarthy’s last four starts.
Cincinnati
The Reds have lost six of Mahle’s last eight starts.
Prediction:
McCarthy has been solid but I expect the Braves’ offense to jump a struggling Mahle and spark another high-scoring game between these two teams. Atlanta has an underrated offense that did generate four runs last night but I expect more tonight as this game goes over.
The Pick: Braves/Reds over 8.5
