Padres’ Mitchell takes no-decision vs. Dodgers
Bryan Mitchell allowed three earned runs, five hits and three walks with four strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Tuesday against the Dodgers. Mitchell tossed 51 of his 86 pitches for strikes in the quality start, his first of the season in four outings.
The biggest obstacle for Mitchell has been his inability to avoid walks, as he has issued at least three in each start this season. If he can work his walk totals down, he’ll be able to work deeper into games.
Rockies’ Bettis coming off strong outing vs. Pirates
Chad Bettis lowered his ERA on the season to 1.44 following 7 1/3 shutout innings in Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over the Pirates. It was snowing in Pittsburgh but that didn’t seem to affect Bettis, who yielded just five hits and a couple walks in the gem. He did require a little help from the bullpen after being pulled with a runner on third with one out in the eighth, and Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee came through.
While it’s great to see Bettis’ shiny ERA, three of his four starts have been on the road and he has a 15/10 K/BB ratio over 25 frames. He’ll take on the Padres in Denver next.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 6-13 in their last 19 games versus the Rockies overall and have dropped 12 of their last 17 games in Colorado.
Colorado
The Rockies have won five of Bettis’ last seven starts against the Padres.
Prediction:
The Rockies should be a safe play to win Monday night but they’re too rich for my blood in terms of the money line. So let’s look at the total. The under is 5-1 in Bettis’ last six starts against the Padres, is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings between these two teams, and has cashed in 21 of Bettis’ last 27 starts overall. Bettis has had good success against the Padres, who don’t hit much. Oddsmakers list the total at 11 runs, which makes sense since it’s Coors Field but I still think the number is set too high.
The Pick: Padres/Rockies under 11
