Can Sean Manaea build off his positive start for the Oakland A’s?
Manaea allowed just one run and three hits over eight strong innings to pick up his first victory of the season last Wednesday against the Rangers. He threw 64 of his 94 pitches for strikes, punching out four batters while walking just one in the quality start. The lefty has been great thus far, registering 11 strikeouts and just one walk over his first 15 2/3 innings in 2018. His ERA is an impressive 1.15.
Of course, the A’s need to bounce back offensively after they were shut down by the Angels’ Shohei Ohtani on Sunday afternoon. Matt Joyce did his second home run of the season but he’s hitting just .235 in 11 games.
Los Angeles Dodgers send struggling Hyun-Jin Ryu to Mound
Ryu struggled with his command and went just 3 2/3 innings in an extra-innings loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday. He gave up three runs on five hits but also walked five while striking out just two. The left-hander will get a little bit of a leash to start the season but the Dodgers have great depth in the starting rotation so he’ll need to bounce back quickly.
Meanwhile, Kenley Jansen struck out three Giants in a scoreless 10th inning on Sunday to close out a 2-1 win for his first save of the season. His velocity is down and there’s some concern that the 30-year-old could be wearing down after plenty of extra innings on his arm over the last three years. Then again, it’s early.
MLB Betting Trends
Oakland
The A’s have won six of their last seven meetings against the Dodgers.
Los Angeles
The Dodgers have been a great home play, winning 60 of their last 84 games in L.A.
Prediction:
I’m going to fade Ryu and take the plus odds with the A’s tonight. The Dodgers are 0-6 in Ryu’s last six starts dating back to last season, are 2-9 in his last 11 outings when he pitches the first game of a series, and are 1-5 in his last six starts when he’s coming off seven or more days of rest. The Dodgers are also fade material overall, losing four of their last five games overall. They’re not hitting and one of their worst pitchers is on the mound tonight.
The Pick: Oakland A’s +111
