St. Louis Cardinals Fantasy Spin
Miles Mikolas wasn’t at his best in Saturday’s Grapefruit League start against the Nationals, surrendering four runs on six hits over his three innings of work. Mikolas walked two and struck out two on the afternoon. He struggled to keep the ball in the yard in this one, allowing home runs to Anthony Rendon and Matt Adams. He also helped his own cause, blasting a two-run homer off of Stephen Strasburg in the second inning. It’s the second straight rough outing for Mikolas who now sports a troublesome 6.23 ERA over 13 innings on the spring.
Milwaukee Brewers Fantasy Spin
Jhoulys Chacin struck out four batters over 5 1/3 innings in a Cactus League start against the Rockies on Saturday. Chacin surrendered three runs on six hits and one walk over five-plus frames. The 31-year-old right-hander has already been tabbed the Brewers’ Opening Day starter and has looked impressive, allowing only four runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over 14 innings this spring. He’s worthy of a rotation spot in standard mixed leagues, despite boasting a rather pedestrian strikeout rate, because of the surrounding talent in Milwaukee.
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 0-4 in their last four games versus the Brewers but are 13-3 in Mikolas’ last 16 road starts.
Milwaukee
The Brewers are 1-4 in Chacin’s last five home starts but are 5-1 in this last six outings overall.
Prediction:
There’s some in the defending National League champs today. The Cardinals added Paul Goldschmidt to their lineup this offseason but they had a light-hitting spring. Mikolas was their best pitcher last season but he struggled in Grapefruit League play himself, even though it’s important to remember he had two disastrous spring training starts last year, too. The bottom line is that Chacin has fared much better versus right-handed hitters than lefties and save for Matt Carpenter, most of St. Louis’ damage comes from the right side. Meanwhile, Mikolas does allow more fly balls and hard contact to lefties and the Brewers have three good ones in Christian Yelich, Travis Shaw and Mike Moustakas. I’ll take Milwaukee at a cheap price.
The Pick: Milwaukee Brewers -105
