Updated Cardinals World Series Odds
ST. LOUIS, MO (The Spread) – The St. Louis Cardinals are nearing a contract extension with one of their core pieces from their World Series run last year.
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are “close to finalizing” a six-year extension with third baseman Matt Carpenter worth $51-55 million. Goold says the contract “could be finalized and announced this weekend.”
Carpenter, 28, had a breakout campaign in 2013 when he hit .318 while scoring 126 runs and racking up 199 hits. He also doubled 55 times, hit 11 home runs and drove in 78 runs from the leadoff spot. He was a key piece for a St. Louis club that won the NL pennant and lost to Boston in the World Series.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Cardinals are 8/1 to win the 2014 World Series, which give them the second-best odds behind the Dodgers at 13/2. The Cardinals are also 19/4 to win the NL pennant and are -175 to win the NL Central Division in 2014.
The over/under total for the Cardinals this season is 90.5 for total number of wins.
