Danzing Candy vs. Mo Tom Derby Pick

Kentucky Derby 5/7/16 Danzing Candy vs. Mo Tom Prop Pick

Which thoroughbred will finish higher in the 2016 Kentucky Derby, Danzing Candy or Mo Tom? Here's our pick for this matchup prop.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv currently list Mo Tom as a -130 money line favorite to finish higher than Danzing Candy this evening at Churchill Downs. This matchup prop is a wager on just these horses, so neither have to win the Kentucky Derby or even finish in the money. They just have to finish higher than the other horse.

Bet Today's Kentucky Derby

Mo Tom, which drew the No. 4 post position on Wednesday, is trained by Tom Amoss and owned by G M B Racing. In seven career starts he has three wins, zero second-place finishes and three third-place showings for career earnings of $291,526. Mo Tom's jockey for today's race is Corey Lanerie.

As for Danzing Candy, his owner is Halo Farms, Bashor and Jim and Dianne Bashor and is trained by Clifford W. Sise Jr. In five starts he has three wins with no second or third-place finishes on his resume. After drawing the far outside post, No. 20, Mike Smith will be Danzing Candy's jockey today.

OUR PICK: Mo Tom is intriguing because after being bumped early in the Lecomte Stakes, he still managed to pull off the win. But then he was basically stopped when making his bid in the stretch of both the Grade 2 Veterans Ford Risen Star Stakes and Grade 2 Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby, so this isn't a horse with much luck. On the other side is Danzing Candy, who took down Mor Spirit in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 12 in his stakes debut. Even though he had a dud performance in the Santa Anita Derby, it was on a muddy track. Given Mo Tom's unfortunate bad luck, we'll take a flier on the race horse that took down one of the top contenders in this year's Kentucky Derby and lay the wood on Danzing Candy here.
