Updated Open Championship Odds
The first day of the 2016 British Open is in the books and a former champion set an incredible pace on Thursday.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Phil Mickelson is the clear favorite, with 7/2 odds to win. Other short odds are Martin Kaymer (14/1), Rory McIlroy (14/1) and Patrick Reed (16/1). The British Open Championship continues Friday-Sunday from Royal Troon in Troon, Scotland.
Mickelson is in the lead by three shots after tying the record for lowest score in a major by shooting a 63 on Thursday. He rimmed out a birdie on 18 for a chance setting a new record of 62. Mickelson won the 2013 British Open and is seeking his sixth major championship.
Kaymer is tied for second with Reed at -5 for the tournament. Both men opened the major by shooting a 66. Kaymer has never won the British Open, but has two majors to his credit. Reed has never won a major and never finished in the top 10 of one.
McIlroy is tied for 22nd right now at -2 after posting a 69 on Thursday. He won the 2014 British Open and has four majors to his credit. He was unable to play in last year’s British Open, which would have been his title defense.
