British Open Picks
The British Open Championship gets underway early Thursday morning. Here is a look at some golfers we like to contend for this year’s title.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Jason Day and Dustin Johnson are co-favorites, as each has 8/1 odds. Other short odds to win are Rory McIlroy (9/1) and Jordan Spieth (10/1). The British Open Championship takes place Thursday-Sunday from Royal Troon in Troon, Scotland.
Jason Day has been a strong play in majors for more than a year. He has placed in the top 10 in the last five major championships, including one win. He finished fourth in the British Open a year ago and already has three wins to his credit this year. Look for him to push hard for his second major.
Sergio Garcia has 25/1 odds to win and while he hasn’t won a major in his career, he has knocked on the door of this event many times. He finished second last year and second in 2014. He also placed in the top 10 seven other times. He is coming off a fifth-place finish in the U.S. Open and should be right in the mix this weekend.
Andy Sullivan is a bit of a long shot at 80/1, but there are reasons to like this European player. He has finished in the top 6 of his last two events and has made the cut in five straight, including the U.S. Open. In his British Open debut last year, he finished 30th. He is coming off his best major performance at the U.S. Open and should be able to build that. Being a European Tour player, this major should be one where he can flourish.
