Holmes wins Shell Houston Open
HUMBLE, TX (TheSpread) – J.B. Holmes wasn’t on the radar to win the Shell Houston Open entering Sunday’s final round, but he still found a way to do it, claiming the title in a playoff.
Holmes posted an 8-under 64 on Sunday to get to -16 for the tournament, which allowed him to have the clubhouse lead early. Both Johnson Wagner and Jordan Spieth would ultimately catch him and force a playoff, but Holmes outlasted both with a pair of pars on the 18th hole to get the win.
According to the oddsmakers, Holmes had 25/1 odds to win this week’s tournament, which means a wager of $100 on him to prevail will pay out an additional $2,500.
Spieth had the lead after the third round and he posted a 2-under 70 on Sunday to reach the playoff. Wagner posted a 3-under 69 on Sunday, including a birdie on the 72nd hole. On the first playoff, both Holmes and Wagner pared while Spieth had a bogey. Wagner then was the one to bogey the second playoff hole, allowing Holmes to get the victory.
