Velasquez vs. Dos Santos Odds
Velasquez (9-0) enters the fight as the UFC Heavyweight Champion and will defend against the challenger, dos Santos (13-1). The fight will take place from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and air live on FOX at 9PM ET.
According to oddsmakers, Velasquez is the favorite to retain his championship, as he has odds of -165 to win Saturday’s five-round contest. Dos Santos comes into the contest with a money line of +135 to defeat Velasquez and win the championship.
Velasquez is unbeaten in his young MMA career. He came to the UFC after a successful wresting stint at Arizona State University and he used that wrestling base to help him win with ground-and-pound striking early in his career. Since that time he has developed into a solid boxer with big power in his hands. He has knocked out his last three opponents, including Brock Lesnar to win the title back on Oct. 23 of last year. Velasquez hasn’t fought since then, as he had surgery that put him on the shelf for the majority of the last year. Velasquez has the technical skills to beat dos Santos, but hasn’t fought more than a 15-minute fight in his time in the octagon.
Dos Santos is 7-0 in the UFC with four wins in that span by KO. He is coming off decision wins over Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson to earn the title shot. Dos Santos has a good mix of grappling and striking. He has a jiu-jitsu black belt and a devastating uppercut that has earned him a number of wins. Dos Santos also has never fought a full 25-minutes in the octagon, so his cardio could be an issue. He also hasn’t faced a fighter with the wrestling ability of Velasquez, so he may have to fight off his back. Dos Santos may be able to capitalize on the long layoff for Velasquez and push a fast pace early to end the fight quickly.
