UFC 166 Results
Velasquez (13-1) defended his UFC Heavyweight Championship against Dos Santos (16-3) by picking up a fifth-round TKO. Velasquez implemented the same strategy he used in their last bout, pushing the pace and making Dos Santos work at every moment. The challenger landed a big left right off the bat, but Velasquez was able to eat it and use his grapping to control each round. By the final round, Dos Santos was exhausted and beat up, and couldn’t defend himself when Velasquez opened up a flurry. According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Velasquez was the favorite to win the bout, as he had odds of -205 to prevail, which means a wager of $205 on him to win will pay out an additional $100.
The co-main event of Saturday’s card saw Daniel Cormier (13-0) defeat Roy Nelson (19-9) by unanimous decision. The fight went fairly predictable, as Cormier was able to use his wrestling to control the fight on the ground and against the cage. Cormier did show improved striking and footwork to avoid Nelson’s punches, but it was his grappling that allowed him to control the fight. Nelson didn’t have much explosiveness for Cormier to deal with and the result seemed obvious after the first round. According to oddsmakers, Cormier had a money line of -600 to win, which means a wager of $600 on Cormier to win will pay out an additional $100.
