Ortiz, who has not won a fight since 2006, has been told by the UFC that if he loses on Saturday, he will not be asked back for another fight.
According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Bodog Bader is the clear favorite to win the contest with odds of -575, while Ortiz comes in with a money line of +375. UFC 132 takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and airs live on PPV, starting at 9PM ET.
WHY PICK BADER
Bader (12-1) has torn through everyone he has faced outside of current light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones. He is the clear favorite for a reason, as he is younger, faster, and probably stronger. He has been able to get most opponents down to the ground with ease as he had a very successful college wrestling career. He has also improved on his striking and earned a few TKO victories in his career. Ortiz hasn’t won in five years due to his ability to be anything more than just a takedown artist, so Bader should actually be able to find more success by keeping the fight standing.
WHY PICK ORTIZ
Ortiz (15-8-1) was one of the first great champions in UFC history. He would easily takedown his opponents and then ground-and-pound them for a TKO victory. However, Ortiz hasn’t evolved with the sport and is still primarily the same fighter. He does still have the ability to get guys to the ground, but Bader may be tough for him to get down. Still, Ortiz does have everything to lose here, so he will likely be fighting with a lot of desperation and heart. Sometimes that can overcome a lot of weaknesses in other areas.
WHO TO PICK?
I just can’t see Ortiz winning this contest. I do think he will put up a fight and the bout will probably be closer than many would expect, but I still think Bader has all the talents and ability to win this by decision. Bader will be the quicker takedown artist and the better striker. I think he should be able to control most of the fight and win by unanimous decision.
UFC 132 FREE PICK: RYAN BADER -575
