Jones rolls through Shogun
NEWARK, NJ (TheSpread) – Jon Jones became the youngest UFC champion in the history of the organization as he ran through Mauricio “Shogun” Rua to win the UFC Light Heavyweight title at UFC 128.
Jones entered the fight as the favorite according to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Bodog.com with betting odds of -200 while Rua had odds of +160, who a $200 wager on Jones will pay out an additional $100.
Jones dominated the fight from the start, using his kicks, knees, and long jabs to control the striking while mixing in takedowns and hammering Rua with big elbows from inside his guard. By the third round, Rua’s face was a mess and he had little energy to fight back. A late flurry of elbows led to a big knee against the cage that finished Rua for the night and gave Jones the title at 23 years of age.
All the favorites won in the main card bout, including Urijah Faber, who defeated Eddie Wineland by decision in a bantamweight contest. Faber lost the opening round as Wineland had good takedown defense and landed more strikes. Faber bounced back in the final two rounds though, dictating the pace with his quick hands and mixing in takedowns to earn the win. Faber had odds of -500 to win so a $500 wager on him will earn an additional $100 payout.
