According to the oddsmakers at BetDSI, the champion Holm is favored to retain her championship tonight, as she has odds of -300 to win, while Tate has been given a money line of +230 to prevail. These two meet in the co-main event of UFC 196, which takes place tonight from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and airs live on PPV.
Holm (10-0) shocked the world with her second-round KO of the seemingly invincible Ronda Rousey back at UFC 193 in November. Now, everyone looks at Holm as indestructible as she has yet to lose in the octagon, currently sitting at 3-0 with the UFC. Tate (17-5) has won four straight to earn this title fight, all by decision. She is more of a grappler while Holm is a striker, but each have shown willingness to compete in the other’s strength against other opponents.
Tate is a grinder and deserving of this opportunity. If she can work her grappling successfully, she can win this fight. Holm hasn’t really been tested on the ground, but that is largely due to her striking and footwork. She is able to keep the fight at a distance and moves quickly to stay off the cage. In a brief scrum on the ground with Rousey, Holm was able to defend an armbar, something not many others have done. Tate is not a great technical striker. While her skills have improved, she is facing the elite in Holm, as Rousey found out the hard way. Tate can’t afford to keep this fight on the feet, but she may not be able to have much say in that. Look for Holm to use her footwork to keep the fight standing where she will pick Tate apart and earn the successful title defense.
