Denver coach Gary Kubiak has already confirmed that Brock Osweiler will be his starting quarterback when the Broncos host the Chargers on Sunday.
Peyton Manning said that he had hoped to being practicing this week but Kubiak has decided to squash a week’s worth of controversy leading up to Sunday’s game. Osweiler had his issues in Monday night’s win over the Chargers, but he did complete 27-of-39 passes for 299 yards with one touchdown as the Broncos erased a 14-point deficit in a win over the Bengals.
The key for Osweiler is that he hasn’t made a ton of mistakes. Denver has a top 5 defense and when the team has success running the ball, then it takes pressure off whichever quarterback is under center. Osweiler also has a significantly stronger arm that Manning, which is key in the poor playing conditions the Broncos are likely to face moving forward.
That said, there’s no substitute for the experience that Manning brings to the table, especially during the playoffs. If Manning is healthy, Kubiak will have an interesting decision to make next week as the Broncos prepare for their first playoff game.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Mybookie.ag, the Broncos are 7.5-point home favorites over the Chargers for Sunday’s 4:25PM ET kickoff.
