Reports today out of Oakland have the Athletics releasing first baseman Jason Giambi. Giambi returned to Oakland this year after seven years with the New York Yankees. The move is hardly a shock considering Giambi’s age and injury problems this year.

Giambi, the 2000 AL MVP, has been on the disabled list since July 20 with a strained right quadriceps muscle. A five-time American League All-Star, Giambi was batting just .193, the lowest in the majors when he went on the disabled list. He had 11 home runs and 40 RBIs in 83 games for Oakland.
The Athletics are currently in last place in the AL West at 47-61. Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have Oakland currently listed at 130-1 odds to win the 2009 World Series even though they have virtually no chance at making the post season.
