The Boston Red Sox acquired a bat before Friday’s MLB trade deadline, acquiring Victor Martinez from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for pitchers Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price.
Although they’re seemingly backed up at catcher and first base, the Red Sox seemingly needed another bat and V-Mart is a good one. On the year, Martinez is hitting .284 with 15 home runs and 67 RBI. He’ll split time behind the dish, as well as at first base and as a DH.
The Indians did well in this trade too, although it remains to be seen if any of these arms will pan out in the next couple of years. Masterson has already spent some time in the big leagues, but really only has two pitches and struggles against left-handed hitters. Hagadone is a hard-throwing future reliever, but is coming off Tommy John surgery, while Price is still raw at only 22-years old.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Sports Interaction have established the Red Sox’s odds of winning the 2009 World Series at 9/2.
