SEATTLE, WA (The Spread) – Following the news that Percy Harvin will have surgery on his hip, the Seattle Seahawks’ 2014 Super Bowl odds have dropped.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Seahawks are now 9/1 to win next year’s Super Bowl after holding strong at 17/2 before the news that Harvin will undergo surgery to fix his hip. The 49ers and Broncos, meanwhile, remain favored to win the Super Bowl at 6/1, respectively, while the Patriots have the same 9/1 odds as the Seahawks.
On Tuesday night Harvin tweeted that his hip injury will require surgery and that he’ll go under the knife on Thursday. Harvin then hinted that the operation will likely sideline him for the entire season, although NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that he could return in 3-4 months. As NFL.com’s Albert Breer reports, the Seahawks’ “preliminary plan” is to proceed with Harvin on the PUP list.
The typical timeline for a torn hip labrum is 3-4 months but that timetable could become longer if doctors need to reshape the bone once inside the hip. Regardless of whether or not Harvin returns at some point this year, the Seahawks have to game plan as if he won’t be around.
The good news is that the Seahawks still boast a formidle offense thanks to Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, Sidney Rice and Golden Tate. The bad news is that Rice reportedly is still dealing with a knee injury and Tate isn’t Harvin, who was expected to elevate Seattle’s offense to another level this season. We’ll see if the Hawks still have enough to overpower San Francisco in the NFC West, or even avoid being leapfrogged by the upstart Rams in the NFC West.
