The Boston Red Sox lost a significant piece of their starting rotation when they placed All-Star Tim Wakefield on the disabled list Tuesday with a lower back strain.
Wakefield has been solid this season, compiling an 11-3 record with a 4.31 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. His 11 wins ties him for the American League lead, but obviously he’ll lose that honor with this recent trip to the DL – his third in the last three years.
With Wakefield being place on the DL, the BoSox recalled right-handed pitcher Clay Buchholz from Triple-A Pawtucket. He’ll take over Wakefield’s spot in the starting rotation and get a start Wednesday against the Texas Rangers.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING currently list the Red Sox as a 4/1 favorite to win the 2009 World Series. They also have Boston as a 9/4 favorite to win the American League Pennant.
