(The Spread) – Derek Jeter will be stuck on 2,998 hits for at least another day as Friday night’s game between the Yankees and Rays was rained out.
After notching career hit number 2,998 in the first inning of Thursday’s ballgame, Jeter grounded out in four consecutive at-bats. He was scheduled to hit in the two-hole for Friday’s game against Tampa Bay’s Jeremy Hellickson, as he was dropped from the leadoff spot in favor of Brett Gardner.
The Rays and Yankees will play a makeup game on September 22 following the cancellation of Friday’s game. The Yankees apparently pushed for a doubleheader on Saturday, but were denied. Barring a season-ending injury, Jeter will eventually reach the historic milestone of 3,000 hits, although now he’ll have one less home game to play this weekend.
