General manager Mitch Kupchak announced that Howard’s decision is not to return to the Lakers, meaning that the former L.A. center will sign with Houston.
“We have been informed of Dwight’s decision to not return to the Lakers,” Kupchak said in a statement on the team’s web page. “Naturally we’re disappointed. However, we will now move forward in a different direction with the future of the franchise and, as always, will do our best to build the best team possible, one our great lakers fans will be proud to support.”
With the Rockets set to give Howard a four-year contract with the Rockets will be worth $87.6 million. The Lakers held Howard’s Bird Rights and were therefore offering a five-year, $118 million deal.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Rockets are now 10/1 to win the 2014 NBA Championship after being 20/1 at the start of the season. The Heat, meanwhile, remain a 2/1 favorite while the Thunder are 6/1 and the Bulls and Clippers are both 10/1, respectively. The Spurs are also 11/1.
