The New York Yankees are in a battle in the American League East as they’re currently two games behind the Boston Red Sox and just two games up on the Toronto Blue Jays. So why are they benching one of their best hitters?

The Yankees have decided to bench third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who is in the midst of an 0 for 15 slump and is hitting just .145 in June (8 for 55). On the year, he’s batting just .212 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs.

Even though the Yankees are set to take on the Marlins in A-Rod’s home state of Miami, the club decided to bench Rodriguez because of fatigue. He’s expected to return to the lineup soon, but the Bombers will need him to start hitting soon.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sports Interaction still have plenty of faith in the Bronx Bombers, who have short odds to win the 2009 World Series at 4/1. In comparison, the BoSox are 9/2 to win.
