The 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes is just hours away now and our team of writers and handicappers are ready to hand out their picks and predictions for the third leg of the Triple Crown.
Win: Fly Down (4.5/1)
We absolutely love this colt for several reasons. One, he’s coming off a sharp prep in which he won the G2 Dwyer at Belmont Park on May 8. He’s also beaten fellow favorite First Dude twice in head to head outings and he’s won three of his last four races dating back to November 28 of last year. This horse was made for this track and this park and we think he’s ready for his breakout performance, even though this will be his first Grade 1 stakes race of his career. If nothing else, we love Fly Down to finish in the money, but we’re picking him to claim victory tonight at Belmont Park.
Place: Ice Box (2/1)
The favorite has a lot going for him heading into the race, namely his second place showing at the Kentucky Derby on May 1. He’s also fresh seeing as how he didn’t run at the Preakness (something fellow favorite First Dude can’t claim) and appears to be in top condition. We favor Fly Down in this race, but we wouldn’t be surprised in the least if the favorite won at Belmont Park tonight.
Show: Drosselmeyer (12/1)
This is our sleeper tonight, as Drosselmeyer’s running style is conducive to how the Belmont is usual run. He’s been a one-paced horse in his last three races, which is fine if he can find a good rhythm and take advantage of an opening late in the race. It was discovered that he had a bruised hoof after he raced at the Dwyer, but he should be fine now. Speaking of the Dwyer, he finished second behind Fly Down that day, who as you know is our pick to win tonight.
