The third and final leg of the Triple Crown is in the books, as Drosselmeyer shocked the field to win the 2010 Belmont Stakes. Let's take a look at the results and payouts from Belmont Park.
Drosselmeyer opened the day at 12/1, which put him as a mid-range long-shot. He essentially shocked the field by edging out Fly Down and First Dude to claim an impressive victory. He paid $29.00 for a wager on win, $11.60 for place and $7.70 for show.
When odds were released earlier this week, three contenders emerged as favorites. Ice Box opened at 2/1, while First Dude was 4/1 and Fly Down was 5/1. Earlier today, Ice Box and First Dude remained at 2/1 and 4/1 respectively, but Fly Down’s odds decreased slightly to 4.5/1.
One of the main reasons Ice Box emerged as the favorite was because of his strong showing at the 2010 Kentucky Derby on May 1. He finished second behind Super Saver, while edging out third-place finisher Paddy O’prado down the stretch. But he ran extremely poor at the Belmont, failing to finish in the top 5.
First Dude came out of nowhere as a 22/1 long-shot to finish second at the Preakness Stakes a couple of weeks ago. He gave winner Lookin at Lucky all he could handle, but eventually fell to second while holding off a hard-charging Jackson Bend (who finished third). He finished third at the Belmont, paying $4.90 on a show bet.
Fly Down was a relative unknown entering the Belmont Stakes because he hadn’t raced in either the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness. But he won the G2 Dwyer at Belmont Park on May 8, making him one of the favorites to win the third leg of the Triple Crown due to his success at the track. He finished second, earning bettors $6.80 for a wager on place, and $5.10 for a wager on show.
