NEW YORK, NY (The Spread) – Who will be the next full time coach of the New York Rangers? Let’s check out the odds.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Lindy Ruff is the current favorite to take over the vacant head coaching job in New York at 13/4 odds. Alain Vigneault and Mark Messier have the next best odds at 7/2, respectively, while Dave Tippett is 11/2.
Continuing with the odds, Dallas Eakins is 7/1, Mike Keenan is 15/2 and Paul Maurice is 8/1. Marc Crawford, meanwhile, is 17/2 and Guy Boucher has odds of 15/1 to become the Rangers’ next head coach.
The Rangers fired John Tortorella earlier this week following their loss to the Bruins in the playoffs. He had served as the team’s coach for the past five seasons but New York performed below expectations in 2013. GM Glen Sather said that he made the decision to fire Tortorella but it wasn’t based on “one situation, it wasn’t one specific thing.”
“I won’t speculate or criticize what happened with Torts or give reasons on why,” Sather said. “After the work he did after the year trying to improve the team, it’s a decision that I made, it was consulted with a few people, but removing anyone from the coaching role is a difficult decision. It was a tough decision but I feel like I made the right decision for us to move forward. After doing the analytical work we do after every season, I thought I needed to do something to move our team forward. Every coach has a shelf life and I have told every coach I have hired that this will happen.”
