(The Spread) – Fresh off his victory at the Kentucky Derby, Animal Kingdom is favored to win the Preakness Stakes on May 21.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog.com have released two Animal Kingdom prop odds for the 2011 Preakness.
For the prop, “Will Animal Kingdom win the Prerakness Stakes?” a wager on “Yes” is 3/1 and a wager on “No” is 1/4. And for the prop, “Will Animal Kingdom win the Triple Crown?” a wager on “Yes” is paying off at 11/2, while a wager on “No” has odds set at 1/9.
Heading into the Kentucky Derby, Animal Kingdom was a 30/1 long shot so it’s understandable that oddsmakers doubt that he can win this year’s Triple Crown. It also doesn’t hurt that the last Triple Crown winner (Affirmed) came all the way back in 1978.
But Animal Kingdom settled two doubts at Churchill Downs last Saturday, one of which is whether or not he can run on dirt. (Clearly he can.) The other doubt was whether or not he could win despite only having four career races under his belt. Well, in five career outings he has three wins and two second-place finishes so experience (or lack thereof) isn’t a problem with this thoroughbred.
The concern heading into the Preakness is whether or not Animal Kingdom’s competition will be up for the challenge. When the Preakness’ odds were released last Sunday, Dialed In had the same 4/1 odds as Animal Kingdom, making both of them the favorites. Dialed In finished a disappointing 8th at the Kentucky Derby, but most observes will argue that we didn’t see the best out of him that day.
