According to several media sources, the Detroit Lions have a contract in place with Wake Forest linebacker prospect Aaron Curry, but are waiting on Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford, who appears to be their first choice.
Anticipating that the Lions will eventually take Stafford with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made the former UGA signal caller –2000 to be taken with the top pick. Detroit is apparently waiting to hear back from Stafford and his agent on whether or not he will sign a contract before Saturday’s NFL draft begins.
If Stafford doesn’t sign soon, then Curry is most likely the Lions pick at No. 1. Oddsmakers currently have Curry’s odds established at +1500 to be taken with the first pick, which could be a tremendous value at this point. Detroit’s third choice appears to be Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith, who is +400 to be taken with the top overall pick.
The 2009 NFL Draft starts at 4:00PM ET on Saturday, April 25 and continues with rounds 3 and 7 on Sunday, April 26.
