The San Antonio Spurs received devastating news recently when it was determined that Manu Ginobili has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right ankle and will miss the remainder of the season and playoffs. According to oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global, the Spurs are now 15/1 long shots to win the 2009 NBA Championship.
The Spurs started the 2008-09 NBA Season as small 8/1 long shots to win the NBA Finals. They were 9/2 long shots before Ginobili’s injury and now their odds rest at 15/1. Without Ginobili, there are serious doubts that San Antonio will be able to hang with the best of the Western Conference, which includes the Los Angeles Lakers.
Even though they’re now long shots to emerge as champions, the Spurs are the most-veteran lead team in the NBA. Tim Duncan won’t let them fall without a fight and Tony Parker is still one of the best young point guards in basketball. The Spurs will now count on Roger Mason Jr. to fill in for Ginobili, with veteran Michel Finely coming off the bench.
It remains a long shot, but at 15/1 odds, maybe the Spurs still have a ton of value. Bet at your own risk, but if you’re looking for a playoff sleeper, maybe you should look no further than San Antonio, who has had to deal with Ginobili’s injuries before.
