(The Spread) – The Baltimore Orioles have started the 2011 season by winning all four of their opening games. So are they for real or are they destined to cool off?
Thanks to their sweep over the Rays and their win over the Tigers on Monday, the Orioles are the talk of the baseball world for the moment. Granted, starting 4-0 in a 162 game-season is hardly anything to celebrate. But it’s not like they beat up on the Pirates and Royals either. The Rays won the AL East last year and many people are picking the Tigers to win the AL Central this season.
Plus, people are very aware that this Baltimore team has talent and is led by a manager in Buck Showalter that has lit a fire under their seats. Brian Roberts is healthy and has started off the season hitting .294 with two home runs and either RBI. Nick Markakis (who struggled last year), is playing incredibly well both offensive and defensively, while young catcher Matt Wieters has started off the 2011 season by hitting .385.
The pitching has been perhaps the biggest surprise. The O’s staff has only give up four runs in their first four games and the bullpen has been lights out. Pitching is the key for this team and so far, so good.
Of course, it’s only the first week in April. Three weeks from now the O’s could be nestled into last place in the AL East and everyone will think, “Things are back to normal.” But if you’re a bettor and you’re looking to ride a hot team without having to pay a big price, jump on the Orioles now.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com, the Orioles are +4000 on the money line to win the 2011 World Series and +1700 to win the AL East.
