Many prognosticators such as ESPN’s Dick Vitale spoke with vitriol about Virginia Commonwealth’s inclusion into the NCAA Tournament, yet here the Rams are still standing.
I’ll admit that even I was clamoring for another team such as Alabama, Colorado, or Virginia Tech to be included instead of VCU.
I think the Rams have done a fairly decent job of shutting us all up.
The latest to fall at the hands of Virginia Commonwealth is Kansas as the Rams topped the top-seeded Jayhawks 71-61 in the Elite Eight Sunday afternoon to advance to the school’s first Final Four.
Led by a gritty effort from point guard Joey Rodriguez and power forward Jamie Skeen, the Rams showed no fear as they led nearly the entire game and held off a second-half charge by a desperate Kansas squad.
Virginia Commonwealth has yet to be favored in any of its games yet in the NCAA Tournament, but it has mattered very little as it has covered the spread every time.
The underdog role will be something the Rams have in common with their Final Four opponent in Butler, a team that has also played the overlooked card throughout the tournament despite being last year’s NCAA runner-up.
Virginia Commonwealth will likely again be an underdog come Saturday’s semifinal game, so Shaka Smart can continue to get his players to believe in the us versus the world mentality.
