Thursday’s action started with Northeastern giving three-seed Notre Dame a scare in a 69-65 Irish victory. Notre Dame was a 12-point favorite but the Huskies covered easily.
The following game produced the first major upset of the 2015 NCAA Tournament as UAB knocked off Iowa State as a 14-point underdog. Not even an hour later, No. 14 Georgia State beat No. 3 Baylor 57-56 as a 9.5-point dog, while Butler beat Texas 56-48 as a 2.5-point dog and UCLA upset SMU 60-59 as a 4-point underdog.
All told, underdogs went 12-4 against the spread, including four outright victories. It’ll be interesting to see if the pendulum swings back in favor of favorites on Friday when the NCAA Tournament action continues.
