Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com had made the Hawkeyes a 9-point underdog heading into Saturday’s game and Iowa end up winning outright, 67-65. Jarryd Cole had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes, while Bryce Cartwright and Matt Gatens each added 13 points for Iowa.
Cartwright hit a floater with 31 seconds left to give the Hawkeyes a 65-61 lead, but Purdue’s Lewis Jackson put in a layup to cut the deficit to 65-63. It was Gatens two game-icing free throws with six seconds left that gave Iowa the shocking victory.
The loss now puts the Boilermakers’ hopes for a No. 1 seed in jeopardy and, as previously noted, allowed the top-ranked Buckeyes to win the Big Ten title. In other Big Ten Tournament action on Saturday, Michigan downed Michigan State 70-63 as a 1-point favorite.
