TAMPA, FL (The Spread) – Will the Buccaneers select Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston with the No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL draft? One of the latest reports may have provided the answer to that question.
After attending the scouting combine over the weekend, CBS Sports’ Dane Brugler “couldn’t find one person I trust” inside the NFL who believes Tampa Bay will pass on Winston at No. 1 overall.
The Bucs set off alarms last week when they released veteran Josh McCown, leaving Mike Glennon as the only viable option to start at quarterback next season. The other signal-caller at the top of this year’s draft is Marcus Mariota, but Winston is the consensus pick as the most talented pro-ready quarterback in this year’s class.
The Bucs hired Dirk Koetter as offensive coordinator a few months back and while he does have some connection to Mariota because of his relationship with Oregon coach Mark Helfrich, Winston is a better fit for Koetter’s offense. We’ll find out in a couple of months what the Bucs decide to do with the No. 1 overall pick.
