St. Jude Championship

I hadn't picked up a hard copy of the Sunday New York Times in a while. In this week's there was a New York Times Sports Magazine included. On the cover was Phil Mickelson. The design is a head shot of Phil looking at the viewer as if from the bottom of a hole, a golf hole, that is. And it's upside down---you get a pretty good idea of where the story is going.

Experts: The Memorial

A few weeks ago I talked about Rory Sabbatini and his comment that Tiger is beatable. I talked about how, generally, that’s a dumb move given other would be Tiger foes’ comments and/or actions directed Eldrick’s way and the resulting thrashing (Luke Donald wearing red on Sunday at a major in the final group with Tiger, and Stephen Ames questioning Tiger’s driving ability before Match Play a couple years ago were two examples).

Experts: The Colonial

I’ve had so many close calls this year that I no longer think about how I might celebrate in this space if an outright pick wins. I did, though, until pretty recently. When Bob Estes had a great chance to win a few weeks ago I’d started to write in my mind: Bob Estes, you are the man!

AT&T Classic Preview

I went on record a few years ago in support of Rory Sabbatini, who was so annoyed and frustrated with the tortoise pace of his playing partner Ben Crane that he simply played the rest of the 17th hole at the Booz Allen ahead of Crane, ignoring all golf protocol. It was like Jim Morrison on Ed Sullivan. OK not really, but you get my point. In any case, I was all for Sabbatini.
