It certainly doesn’t hurt having one of the most dynamic players in the country at quarterback. Oddsmakers have made Pat White and the West Virginia Mountaineers a 15/1 long shot to win the 2009 BCS National Championship.

Perhaps all the Mountaineers need to compete for a national title is quarterback Pat White. White threw for 1,724 yards last year and also compiled 1,335 yards on the ground. His partner in crime, Steve Slaton, was drafted in April, but speedster Noel Devine should fit right in to WVU’s backfield and receiver Dorrell Jalloh is expected to have a big year. Linebacker will be one of the Mountaineers’ strengths in 2008, as Reed Williams (107 tackles) and Mortty Ivy (six sacks) return for another season.

If West Virginia can build off of their incredible win over Oklahoma in last year’s Fiesta Bowl, the Mountaineers are going to be scary in 2008. If White can stay healthy, they should breeze through the Big East again this year and contend for a national championship. They’ll need to win out, however, because their strength of schedule is a major weakness. But just like they proved in the Fiesta Bowl, the Mountaineers are no pushovers and White and Devine could have huge seasons.
