Free Pick: Cards-Hawks

One of the more surprising teams in the NFL this season has been the Arizona Cardinals. The Cards take on their NFC West rivals Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made the Cardinals a  -3 point spread favorite. The over/under for this game has been set at 47.5 total points.

Considering that the Cardinals are 6-3 this year and the Seahawks are 2-7, it might be a little surprising that the line is set so low. But Arizona has really struggled on the road over the last couple of years, plus Seattle’s offense is expected to get a huge boost with the return of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.

The Seahawks are 2-0 against the spread vs. the Cardinals over the last three seasons and 5-3 against the spread vs. Arizona since 1992. Seattle has also had a ton of success against Arizona straight up, faring 6-2 against the Cards straight up since 1992.

Despite what the trends say, however, the stats say otherwise. Arizona leads Seattle in all of the major categories, including points for (29.2 to 18.9), points against (23.1 to 25.7) and passing yards per game (297.2 to just 144.7). The return of Hasselbeck is big for Seattle, but it’s going to take time to shake of the rust. Normally we like taking home teams getting points, but the risk doesn’t seem worth the reward in the situation and Arizona’s pass offense will be too much for the Hawks’ weak secondary.
