Olympic Swimming Relay Odds

LONDON, England (TheSpread) – Americans consider themselves the top swimmers in the world and they intend on proving that in the Swimming Relays at the 2012 Olympics.

There will be six relay events held at the London Games and the Americans are favored in four of the six and have the second shortest odds in the other two events.

For the men, the United States is favored in the 4x200 Freestyle Relay (2/7 odds) and the 4x100 Medley Relay (4/9). The Americans have 7/4 odds to win the 4x100 Freestyle Relay, which is second only to Australia (2/3). At the 2008 Olympics, the United States swept the three events led by the efforts of Michael Phelps, who competed on all three teams. He will be a big factor in this year’s relays as well along with Ryan Lochte, who is looking to have a big Olympic Games as well. At the 2011 World Championships, the Americans won the 4x200 Freestyle Relay and 4x100 Medley Relay while taking third in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay, but only lost to Australia, the winner, by 0.96 seconds.

In the women’s relay event, the United States is favored to win the 4x100 Medley Relay (1/9) and the 4x200 Freestyle Relay (5/9). In the 4x100 Freestyle Relay, the U.S. has 11/8 odds to win, which is second only to the Netherlands (4/5). The United States medaled in all three relays at the 2008 games, but didn’t claim a single gold as Australia won the two events that the U.S. is favored in this year. The U.S. was edged by Netherlands in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay at the 2011 World Championships, losing by just 0.51 seconds. The U.S. did claim victory at the same event in the other two relays, winning both by more than one whole second.

The 2012 Summer Olympics will take place from London, England from July 27 through August 12 of this summer. For the complete odds to win each swimming relay event, see below.
