Arizona Cardinals Odds

The 2008 NFL Season is quickly approaching, with Week 1 action kicking off Thursday, September 4 and proceeding to Sunday, September 7.

Team by team 2008 NFL Super Bowl odds to win are out and oddsmakers from the top online sports books have listed the Arizona Cardinals as 50-1 favorites to hoist the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the year.

This past offseason, the Cardinals biggest move was franchising linebacker Carlos Dansby. They were also able to re-sign defensive back Eric Green (a restricted free agent) and acquire defenders Clark Haggans (Steelers) and Travis LeBoy (Titans) from their respective teams. Despite being able to place the franchise tag on Dansby, however, Arizona was unable to re-sign linebacker Calvin Pace, who inked a free agent deal with the New York Jets. The Cards also lost receiver Bryant Johnson (49ers), safety Terrence Holt (Panthers).

The buzz on the Cardinals this offseason has been mixed. While they certainly beefed up their defense by bringing back Dansby, signing free agents like Haggans and LeBoy, as well as adding first round pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the offense still has plenty of question marks. Can Matt Leinart bounce back from season ending shoulder surgery? Can the offensive line open enough holes for running back Edgerrin James? Will the team buy into second year head coach Ken Whisenhunt’s philosophy?

Around the internet no matter where you look Arizona is a considerable long shot at all of the major bookmakers. Current prices on the Cardinals chances to win the 2009 Super Bowl range from 30/1 at SBG Global to 50/1 at Bodog and

While 50-1 seems like a long shot, the Arizona Cardinals are actually a decent value pick. Unless the Rams and 49ers surprise, the Cards chief competition in the NFC West this year will again be the Seattle Seahawks. If Leinart plays well and everything comes together on offense, the defense might be underrated and they could be one of the bigger surprises. Of course, NFL pundits usually say that about the Cardinals at this time of year, and are disappointed by years end.
