ELMONT, NY (The Spread) - It's the morning of the 2014 Belmont Stakes and in no surprise, California Chrome remains the heavy favorite to win this evening.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, California Chrome is a 4/5 favorite to win Saturday's Belmont, making him the clear favorite among the field. Wicked Strong has the next-best odds at 6/1 while Ride On Curlin is 15/2 and Tonalist is 17/2. Commanding Curve also has comparable odds at 10/1.
Some of the mid-range long shots include Samraat at 20/1, Medal Count at 22/1 and General A Rod at 28/1. Commissioner is also 33/1, while Matterhorn is 40/1 and Matuszak is 50/1, which makes him the biggest long shot in the field tonight at the Belmont.
California Chrome has won six consecutive starts, including the first two legs of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Commanding Curve finished second to Chrome in the Derby, while Ride On Curlin tested Chrome down the stretch in the Preakness, only to place second in the end. California Chrome also has career victories in the Santa Anita Derby, the San Felipe Stakes, the California Cup Derby and the King Glorious Stakes.
If California Chrome wins today at the Belmont, he'll become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed accomplished the feat in 1978. His odds on the money line to win the Triple Crown are currently -125, while the odds that he won't win the Triple Crown tonight are -115.
The 2014 Belmont Stakes will take place tonight at 6:30PM ET from Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The track record belongs to Secretariat at 2:24 in 1973.
