2014 Belmont Stakes Payouts
ELMONT, NY (The Spread) - California Chrome's bid to win the Triple Crown came up well short as Tonalist won the 2014 Belmont Stakes on Saturday.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, California Chrome was a 10/11 favorite roughly 20 minutes before post time. Wicked Strong had the next-best odds at 11/2, while Ride On Curlin is 8/1 and Tonalist is 9/1. Commanding Curve, who finished second in the Kentucky Derby, was 17/2 pre-race.
The heavy favorite never really challenged for the lead as General A Rod and Commissioner battled for most of the race. At one point California Chrome did reach third but it was short-lived as he faded down the stretch to finish fourth alongside Wicked Strong. With him out of the money spots, the payouts were rather large at Belmont Park.
Tonalist, for example, paid out $20.40 on a $2.00 wager to win, $9.60 for a $2.00 wager to place and $7.00 for a $2.00 wager to show. Commissioner, meanwhile, cashed in $23.20 for a $2.00 bet to place and $13.20 for a $2.00 wager to show, while Medal Count posted $13.20 in winnings for a $2.00 wager to show.
A $2.00 EXACTA on 11-8 netted bettors $348.00 while a $1.00 TRIFECTA of 11-8-1 paid out a whopping $3,390.50. A $1.00 SUPERFECTA on 11-8-1-2 paid out $3,808.00 while a $1.00 SUPERFECTA of 11-8-1-9 paid out $5,733.50.
The contender that most pundits thought would challenge California Chrome this week was Wicked Strong, who never came close to the top spot either. Ride On Curlin also disappointed, as did Commanding Curve. This truly was a day for the underdogs.
