2014 Belmont Stakes Betting Preview

2014 Belmont Stakes betting preview odds Triple Crown California Chrome

ELMONT, NY (The Spread) - The 2014 Belmont Stakes is only a couple hours away and with that, here's a betting preview of the final leg of the Triple Crown.

THE FAVORITE: According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, California Chrome remains the favorite at 4/5. He's won six races in a row, including the first two legs of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Since wearing nasal strips, he's undefeated and will be allowed to wear those nasal strips in tonight's Belmont, which is obviously huge for him and for bettors who like his chances to win the Triple Crown.

THE CONTENDERS: Wicked Strong has the next-best odds at 6/1 and is considered the biggest threat to California Chrome after he finished fourth (with a bad trip) in the Kentucky Derby. Ride On Curlin (15/2) should also challenge California Chrome after giving him a great battle in the Preakness, while Tonalist (17/2) and Commanding Curve (10/1) have comparable odds. From there, the odds drop dramatically as Samraat is 20/1, Medal Count is 22/1 and General A Rod is 28/1. The long shots include Commissioner at 33/1, Matterhorn at 40/1 and Matuszak at 50/1.

TRIPLE CROWN ODDS: California Chrome will look to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed accomplished the feat in 1978. California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness earlier this year and is now 4/5 to win the Triple Crown and 20/23 to finish anywhere but first in tonight's Belmont. There have only been 11 Triple Crown winners in horse racing history.

WEATHER: Weather won't be a factor today in Elmont, New York. The high is expected to be 83 degrees with a 0% chance of rain. The track at Belmont Park will run true.

POST POSITIONS: Medal Count drew the rail for tonight's race while California Chrome will start next to him at the No. 2 post. Matterhorn will start in the No. 3 gate, Commanding Curve will start at No. 4, and Ride On Curlin will start at No. 5. The rest of the post positions are as follows: No. 6 Matuszak, No. 7 Samraat, No. 8 Commissioner, No. 9 Wicked Strong, No. 10 General A Rod, No. 11 Tonalist.

START TIME: The 2014 Belmont Stakes will take place tonight at 6:30PM ET from Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The track record belongs to Secretariat at 2:24 in 1973.
