Commissioner Belmont Odds
ELMONT, NEW YORK (The Spread) - As we draw closer to the 2014 Belmont Stakes, let's take a look at one of the long shots in Commissioner.
According to oddsmakers from the online sports book Bovada.lv, Commissioner is a 33/1 long shot to win the Belmont, which takes place this Saturday. California Chrome remains the favorite at 10/11, while Ride On Curlin is 13/2 to win and both Wicked Strong and Tonalist are 7/1, respectively. Commanding Curve, who finished second in this year's Kentucky Derby, is 9/1 to win the Belmont.
Commissioner did not run in either the Kentucky Derby or Preakness, so the Belmont will be his first crack at a Triple Crown race this year. That said, this won't be his first Grade I start. He finished sixth in the Arkansas Derby behind Danza, Ride On Curlin and Bayern, among others. But he did rebound to place second in the Grade II Peter Pan on May 10 and also has a third-place showing in the Grade III Sunland Derby on March 23.
Despite the poor finish in the Arkansas Derby, Commissioner does have a strong pedigree, which includes A.P. Indy. Despite not running in the Kentucky Derby or Preakness himself, he won the 1992 Belmont Stakes and also finished first in the Santa Anita Derby, the Peter Pan and the Breeders' Cup Classic that same year. Winning is in Commissioner's blood, making him a sleeper heading into this weekend's race.
The 2014 Belmont Stakes takes place on Saturday, June 7 at 6:30PM ET.
