Tonalist Belmont Betting Preview
ELMONT PARK, NY (The Spread) – Tonalist could be a sleeper this weekend when he competes in the 2014 Belmont Stakes, but does he have enough experience?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, Tonalist is 15/2 to win the Belmont Stakes, which give him the same odds as fellow contender Commanding Curve. California Chrome, who is going for the Triple Crown this year, is the favorite to win the Belmont at 11/10, while Ride On Curlin has the next-best odds at 11/2. Ride On Curlin finished second to California Chrome in the Preakness.
Tonalist didn’t compete in either the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness Stakes, so the good news is that he’ll be fresh. He also won the Grade II Peter Pan on May 10, which is a 1 1/8 mile distance race, so clearly he can handle a race with a little bit of distance. He also finished second in an Allowance on February 22 and won a MSW in his first race of the year on January 18.
The problem is that he doesn’t have much experience. The Belmont is the longest race of the three legs of the Triple Crown and while he won the Peter Pan, Tonalist has yet to face elite competition. He has zero Grade I races, has only run four times throughout his career, and we don’t know if he can handle a race that’s 12 furlongs.
Tonalist’s pedigree doesn’t provide much insight either. His father was Tapit, who won the 2004 Wood Memorial and the Grade III Laurel Futurity but he finished ninth in the Kentucky Derby that year and nine in the Grade II Pennsylvania Derby.
So, while some believe Tonalist could compete with California Chrome this weekend, we remain skeptical, if only because we haven’t seen enough out of him.
The 2014 Belmont Stakes will take place at 6:30PM ET this Saturday, June 7.
