Following Kentucky Derby 134 and the 133rd running of the Preakness Stakes comes the 140th running of the Belmont Stakes, the final jewel in horse racing’s Triple Crown.
Held annually in June at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, the Belmont Stakes is the third leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown following the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. The Belmont is a 1.5 mile thoroughbred horse race and it’s termed the “Run for the Carnations” due to the blanket of white carnation flowers that are draped over the winner’s neck. The qualification is 3-year olds and the weight is a Colt/Gelding 126 lbs. and Filly is 121 lbs. The purse for the Belmont Stakes is $1 million.
In 2007, the winner was Rags to Riches led by Jockey John Velazquez. On a minimum $2 bet, Rags to Riches paid out $10.60 for a win, $4.40 for place and $3.20 for show.
