Preakness Stakes Post Positions
BALTIMORE, MD (The Spread) - The post positions for the 2013 Preakness Stakes have been drawn and Kentucky Derby winner Orb will start on the rail.
Beside Orb will be Goldencents, who drew the No. 2 post position on Wednesday. Titletown Five will start in the No. 3 post, Departing will start out of the No. 4 gate and Mylute drew the No. 5 post.
Oxbow will start out of the No. 6 gate and will ride beside Will Take Charge, who drew the No. 7 post position. Governor Charlie will start out of the No. 8 post and Itsmyluckyday drew the No. 9 gate.
The No. 7 post position has had the most success over the past few decades. Since 1989, the post has won with Sunday Silence in 1989, Summer Squall in 1990, Timber Country in 1995, Silver Charm in 1997, Big Brown in 2008 and Lookin At Lucky in 2010. Bodemeister, who also finished second in last year's Preakness, started out of the No. 7 gate.
A lot of bettors fall in love with the rail post position but it hasn't produced a winner since 1994. The No. 2 post hasn't won since 1986, while the No. 3 post position hasn't produced a winner since 1993. The No. 8 post, meanwhile, has produced two winners in the past 11 years: War Emblem in 2002 and Bernardini in 2006. The No. 9 post has also had some recent success, producing victories in 2003 with Funny Cide and last year with I'll Have Another.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Orb is favored at 11/10 while Departing has the next best odds at 4/1 and Itsmyluckyday is 6/1. Goldencents is 7/1, while Mylute and Will Take Charge are both 12/1, respectively. Governor Charlie and Oxbow are long shots at 20/1, respectively, while Titletown Five have the worst odds at 30/1.
