2013 Kentucky Derby Preview
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) - The 2013 Kentucky Derby will run later today and we've put together a complete preview of the first leg of the Triple Crown.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Orb and Verrazano are currently 9/2 favorites to win this year's Kentucky Derby. The contender with the next best odds is Revolutionary at 7/1, while Goldencents is 8/1 and Normandy Invasion is 9/1.
Black Onyx drew the rail on Wednesday but he has since been scratched. Oxbow will now essentially have the rail coming out of the No. 2 post, while Revolutionary will exit from the No. 3 post and Golden Soul from the No. 4 post. The two favorites will coming of the No. 14 (Verrazano) and No. 16 (Orb) posts, respectively.
Last year I'll Have Another have surprised by winning the 2012 Kentucky Derby, while Animal Kingdom won the 2011 Derby. Super Saver won in 2010, Mine that Bird won in 2009, and Big Brown won in 2008. Out of those five winners, jockey Calvin Borel won in both 2009 and 2010, and will ride Revolutionary later today.
The 2013 Kentucky Derby will take place at 6:24PM ET (Post Time) and can be seen on NBC. The race will be held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky with the purse being set at $2 million, with $1,425,000 going to the first place finisher. The track is dirt and it's 1 1/4 miles (10 furlongs) long.
